Art comes naturally to the many locals who live and work in the community. Photography, painting, drawing and sculpture are showcased at retail outlets, exhibitions and competitions throughout the region.
Galleries like Fossick Handmade, Aboriginal Art Gallery, Black Crow Studios, Bush Blossom Gallery and Chunky Timbers are must see attractions for culture vultures. The Goldfields Arts Centre, located in the centre of town, is the premier entertainment venue in the Goldfields. It has a wide range of state-of-the-art facilities, including a 700-seat theatre, and an A-class gallery, which stages many quality exhibitions throughout the year. Alongside the events showcased at the Arts Centre, Kalgoorlie Boulder has a thriving amateur dramatics scene. The Goldfields Repertory Club and Stage Left Theatre Troupe both have an active membership and a history of well-directed and performed productions which have gained both state and national recognition.
The annual Saint Barbara’s Festival is a great example of how mining and community go hand in hand. The street parade features hundreds of floats from local groups, schools and businesses, and is capped off with the giant KCGM Haul Pack Trucks making their way down Hannan Street! This festival, held in the first weekend of December, is one not to be missed.
Markets are held in Burt Street, Boulder and at Saint Barbara's Square, Kalgoorlie, on a monthly basis. Boulder Market day is held on the third Sunday of every month, from 9:00am to 1:00pm rain, hail or shine. The Markets in Saint Barbara's Square are presented by the Hannans Goldfields Lions Club and take place on the first Sunday of every month, with the exception of January.
Kalgoorlie Boulder Visitor Centre holds an annual Pure Gold Moments photo competition, open to everyone – tourists and local alike. Any images taken in the Goldfields are eligle to go into the draw to win fantastic prizes. For more information, contact KBVC on (08) 9021 1966.
