TOP 10 THINGS TO DO IN KALGOORLIE BOULDER AND THE GOLDFIELDS THIS SPRING

We can almost taste the change in seasons here in Kalgoorlie Boulder. Spring is around the corner and it's one of our favourite seasons in the Goldfields. Warm days and blue skies are perfect for exploring. We compiled a list of our top 10 things to do this Spring to give you some inspiration. Whether you're a local looking to fill a weekend or you're visiting our wonderful twin City; there's something to suit everyone!

1. Wildflowers

The Goldfields wildflower season runs from around August to October every year. Good winter rains see the forests and shrubs burst into colour at this time of year, where you can witness a striking array of native flowers; bright orange grevillea, Sturt's Desert Pea, purple mulla mulla, yellow cassia, flowering eucalypts and mallees, and breath-taking displays of wildflowers including pink, yellow and white everlastings, and dainty paper daisies. Our region is also one of the few in Western Australia where the distinctive aromatic sandalwood tree can be found. Maps and wildflower booklets are available from us here at Kalgoorlie Boulder Visitor Centre during Wildflower Season.

2. Camping

Spring is the perfect time to pack up the car and go camping. Did you know Kalgoorlie Boulder is an RV Friendly Town? Amongst over perks, this also means we have a 24 hours free stopping zone in the City. If you want some camping inspiration, pick up a Golden Quest Discovery Trail book from the Visitor Centre. This amazing guide will give you a history of the region whilst offering some great inspiration for camping spots including Coolgardie, Kanowna, Broad Arrow, Menzies, Lake Ballard Laverton, Leonora and Kookynie. We personally love setting up camp at Niagara Dam, Lake Ballard and Burra Rocks!

3. Lake Ballard

Whilst Lake Ballard is beautiful and unique year-round, we think the conditions in Spring are just perfect. No flies, the ground is normally dry and the salt is beginning to turn a shimmering white. This is the largest outdoor art installation in Australia; featuring 51 steel statues scattered across the salt lake. It's a great day trip – but is especially magical at sunrise and sunset. So why not take advantage of their toilet facilities and firepits and camp for the night? It's less than a 2 hour drive from Kalgoorlie Boulder and you can stop off in Menzies for a coffee on the way!

4. Audio Tour

The Spring days are perfect for getting outside, so why not go for a walk and learn more about our fabulous twin City? Simply grab a headset for the Kalgoorlie Boulder Audio Walking Tour from us here at the Visitor Centre. At just $15 per person for 24 hours hire, you can explore both Boulder and Kalgoorlie CBD's on foot and find out more about our heritage. Once you've walked up an appetite, why not potter to beautiful Hammond Park and grab a coffee and some delicious scones from Plum Café, open from 9am to 4pm each day.

5. Fossicking

Gold is at the heart of Kalgoorlie Boulder; so why not use this perfect weather as an excuse to get out bush and seek your fortune? There are a number of fossicking and gold prospecting tours available in Kalgoorlie Boulder from Gold Prospecting Kalgoorlie and Gold Nugget Tours. Both can provide everything you need; from detectors to permits – you just need to turn up and be lucky! Contact us at the Visitor Centre to book your tour today.

6. Heartwalk

Get out and about in the Spring sunshine and enjoy Kalgoorlie Boulder's latest art offering, Heartwalk. This amazing arts campaign saw 29 local, national and international artists descend on Kalgoorlie Boulder to add a splash of colour and creativity to closed up shop fronts and the sides of iconic buildings. In May this year, Kalgoorlie Boulder literally burst into colour. You can download a map of the public art trail here or visit us for a hard copy in the Visitor Centre.

7. Race Round

It's Australia's Biggest Party! For a week in September, Kalgoorlie Boulder becomes one big celebration as we embrace The Round. This isn't just a huge day at the races; it's multiple high profile race days at Kalgoorlie Boulder Racing Club, including the XXXX Gold Kalgoorlie Cup and the Boulder Cup, but there are also heaps of events including a welcome cocktail party, charity dinners, ladies luncheons and so much more! There's something for everyone and we just LOVE seeing everyone dolled up for the races! Check out the website for latest events and book your tickets now!

8. Two Up

Experience the aura and excitement surrounding the much-cherished game of Two Up, by visiting the only legalised Two Up School in Australia. Located 10 minutes out of Kalgoorlie Boulder is the original corrugated iron shed and bush ring that was once the Two Up School. Games are held every Sunday from 12:30pm to 5pm. Please note this is an over 18's activity due to gambling regulations.

9. Market Days

The Spring weather is perfect for wandering around the markets, picking up a locally made gift or treat and indulging in some local food and coffee. We are lucky enough to have two market days a month; the massive Boulder Markets, held on the third Sunday of the month at Loopline Park from 9am to 1pm, and the Kalgoorlie Markets, held on the first Sunday of the month at Saint Barbara's Square from 9am to 1pm. So grab a friend and come along for a browse and enjoy the community spirit!

10. Hannan's North Tourist Mine

For those big and little miners in the family, no trip to the Goldfields is complete without a visit to Hannans North Tourist Mine! The amazing tourist hotspot is predominantly outdoors, so Spring is the perfect time to come and explore! You can climb the giant truck, try your hand at gold panning and so much more! Hannans North is open Sunday to Friday from 9am to 4pm
