Super Pit

Disabled Access

You’ll feel dwarfed by the massive Super Pit on the outskirts of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, which is one of the biggest open cut mines in the world.

For gold mining output, this huge hole in the ground leaves the rest in its wake, having harvested more than 50 million ounces of gold.

Its proportions are staggering – three and a half kilometres long, one and a half kilometres across and around 400 metres deep, and growing!

You can learn more about Goldfields history at this land mark which offers a lookout off Goldfields Highway.

The Super Pit now takes in the historic Golden Mile which began in the late 1800s when Irishman Paddy Hannan first made his famous discovery. Today, the Super Pit pumps out 900,000 ounces of gold each year making it the biggest producing gold mine in Australia and one of the largest in the world.

You can view the super pit free by visiting the Super Pit Lookout (except during blasting times - details available from Kalgoorlie Goldfields Visitor Centre), or visit the KCGM Super Pit Shop in Burt Street Boulder.
