Western Australia's Gold Industry takes you back in time to the gold rush days and through to today in the mining industry. This is quite a brief overview and is not always specific to Kalgoorlie.
Charles Yelverton O’Connor was the Engineer in Chief of Railways for Western Australia in 1891 but relieved of his Railway duties so he could focus on projects such as the construction of the Fremantle Harbour works, the Mundaring Weir and the pipe line which would extend from the Mundaring Weir, all the way to Kalgoorlie. This brochure will take you through the life of C. Y. O'Connor from Ireland to Kalgoorlie.
The Golden Pipeline takes you into the Goldfields WAter Supply Scheme that saw the Mudaring Weir built between 1892 and 1902 that continues to supplies water to the Wheetbelt and Goldfields today. Also available at the Visitor Centre is The Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail Guide, a comprehensive self drive guide and a 'time capsule of water, gold and Western Australia', by the National Trust.
Mount Charlotte Reservoir at Kalgoorlie marks the end of the Golden Pipeline and the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme. Mount Charlotte is also the name given to a small underground mining operation located in close proximity to the reservoir and managed by KCGM (Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines).
Herbert Clark Hoover was born in West Branch Iowa, USA on the 10th of August 1874 and graduated from Geology at 22 and sent to the Western Australian Goldfields in 1896 by a London engineering firm. While in Australia he was appointed mine superintendant at the Sons of Gwalia gold mine in Leonora. To visit the ghost town and learn more of this history, the Golden Quest Discovery Trail and Guide Book is a comprehensive self drive trail in the Northern Goldfields and incorporates Gwalia in the trail. During the two and a half years he spent in Australia, it is also beleived that he grew fond of a barmaid at the then newly opened Palace Hotel. From 1929 to 1933 he was the President of the United States of America.
