The Eastern Route

Nullarbor - Eucla to Madura - Eyre Highway - Madura to Norseman - The Eyre Bird Observatory - Norseman - Kambalda

The Eyre Highway is an excellent sealed road surface providing easy driving from the South Australian border passing through Eucla, Mundrabilla, Madura, Cocklebiddy, Caiguna, Balladonia, Norseman Widgiemooltha and Kambalda to Kalgoorlie-Boulder Widgiemooltha. There are toilets, fuel, refreshments and accommodation at most of these stops plus roadside amenities at other points, which include shade shelter, seating, and in some cases toilets.

The historic Fraser Range Sheep Station is located half way between Norseman and Balladonia and provides visitors with a comfortable, relaxing and entertaining stay while enjoying the fantastic facilities and natural surrounds. Fraser Range Station has accommodation to suit every taste, including; a picturesque Caravan and Camping park and historic stone accommodation rooms.

If you want accommodation make sure you book ahead.

Visitors crossing the Nullabor should take every precaution before starting their journey and plan ahead to ensure that their vehicle is safe and reliable, they have sufficient fuel to make it to the next fuel stop, they have a good map of the Nullarbor crossing, that they have made arrangements to either use credit card facilities or pay in cash at fuel and accommodation stops, and that they do not try to drive too far. Fatigue is a major cause of up to 25% of all motor vehicle accidents.

Then, for those seeking adventure, there is the Anne Beadell Highway, which links the opal mining town of Coober Pedy, in South Australia, with Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Also known as the bomb road because it passes through the former atomic bomb test site at Emu, the Anne Beadell Highway is one of the last frontiers of outback travel with no fuel, water, food or spares available for the entire 1430km journey. Travellers should budget for at least five to six days travel because of the conditions and permits are required to cross four of the sections.
