The North East Route
Warburton - Laverton to Warburton - Laverton - Outback Highway
The Outback Highway is the third of Australias great highways linking the east coast with the west through Laverton in WAs north eastern Goldfields to Alice Springs in the Northern Territory and Boulia in Western Queensland and on through to Winton. The total length of the highway is 2,800km, however by cutting through the centre of the country the highway actually reduces the trip from WA to Queensland by 1,600km. However the big difference between the Outback Highway and the Eyre and the Victoria Highway is that 1,700km isnt sealed and is certainly not an all-weather road. While it offers breathtaking scenery and is considered one of the must-do drives for keen and experienced 4WDers, it should only be negotiated after careful consideration of the type of vehicle you are going to take, the condition of the road surface, and the experience of the driver.
The Gunbarrel Highway, which starts at Carnegie Station, near Wiluna, in the northern Goldfields and goes through Warburton Community to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park in the Northern Territory is another adventure trail for hardened off-road enthusiasts.
Adequate supplies of food, fuel and water are essential, not to mention vehicle spares and a high frequency radio.
