GALC is delivering a series of monthly linguistics lectures in Kalgoorlie during 2019.

Do you really know what your Aboriginal language clients or customers are seeking? Which language do they speak? What is Aboriginal English and how does it differ from Standard Australian English? How culturally competent is your workplace?

Using an interpreter to communicate is the most effective, efficient, fast and easiest way to work, in a bi-lingual, bi-cultural or bi-dialectical environment. Interpreters not only assist workers to achieve communication but meet the need of your clients to be heard.

This lecture looks at the role interpreters play in a bi-lingual environment, the interpreter’s code of ethics, what interpreters can and can’t do and how to set up the most effective communication environment. Interpreters ensure the clients or customer receives effective and efficient service and has their needs met. Interpreters can interpret into an Aboriginal language, Aboriginal English or Standard Australian English. Interpreters also provide cultural or social interpretation. We’ll expand on what that is and give examples of how this works for your business.

This lecture is suitable for anyone who works with clients and customers who speak another dialect, language or is from a culturally background different from yourself. The lecture is also for people interested in the field of interpreting and translating or who have a general interest in effective communication with people from a culturally or linguistically diverse background.
