In 1902, while working at the Perseverance Gold Mine in Boulder, young footballer and captain of the Mines Rovers football club, Victor Watts tragically lost his life in a rock fall. Later that year, a match between the Mine Rovers and Warriors was played, with proceeds devoted to a fund for a headstone to honour “poor old Watts.”
Now, more than a century later, the Eastern Goldfields Historical Society is proud to announce the placement of a headstone on Victor’s grave — a long-awaited tribute to one of Boulder’s early sporting figures.
Please join us for the unveiling ceremony at the Old Boulder Cemetery, followed by morning tea Thursday, 4 December 2025 at 8.00am.
Mines Rovers players and supporters are encouraged to wear their team colours in honour of Victor.
