Shibori is a Japanese word that means to twist, turn or press. Shibori techniques are used as a starting point for my work as I am endlessly amazed by the infinite amount of design possibilities they provide for the textile artist. Like the environment, shibori is ever evolving offering an exciting array of design option. Learn the binding, wrapping and basic stitching of Mokume, Maki Age, Karamatsu and Ori-Nui along with the techniques of Arashi, Bomaki and Itajime, then practice and advance your technique with Katano and Guntai Shibori.
A full strength natural Indigo Vat and pale vat will be available wile being guided through layering the 2 hues to produce more complex designs.
WHAT TO WEAR:
Shibori is messy and the dye can stain, please wear old clothes AND shoes that are okay to be stained.
All materials provided for a 2 Day Masterclass.
CATHY MOON BIO
I am an Australian and originally studied textile and design teaching at Newcastle CAE. My love of fabric design enticed me to enrol in a Fabric Printing and Design Course at New England TAFE in Armidale NSW. I became fascinated by the shibori process. After attending workshops by well-known shibori artists, Marg Barnett, Patricia Black, Phil Hali, Anna Lisa Hedstrom, Jean Cacicedo and the founder and director of the World Shibori Network, Yoshiko Wada, I emerged ready to develop my own shibori designs.I produce one of a kind art clothing and art pieces influenced by the huge variety of rich and intense colours that are so much a part of the Australian landscape. I endeavour to reflect the combination of these colours, together with my interpretation of shibori techniques, within my work.I mostly work with natural fibres, particularly silk and cotton.I enjoy experimenting with all shibori but particularly the stitching techniques including Kumo, Mokume and Karamatsu.Affiliations2005-2008 Member of Board of Directors for TAFTA (The Australian Forum for Textile Arts)Current Member of the following associations WSN Australia and New Zealand- online member newsletter editor WSN- World Shibori Network WSNA/NZ- World Shibori Network, The Australian and New Zealand Branch
